Base Oil Grades Explained: Group I, II & III for UAE Industry

Choosing the right base oil grade is critical for lubricant performance. This guide breaks down Group I, II and III base oils to help UAE and GCC buyers make the best decision for their formulation or application.
What Is a Base Oil?
Base oil is the primary component of a finished lubricant, making up the majority of most engine oils, industrial oils and greases before additives are blended in. Its quality directly affects the finished product’s performance, stability and service life.
Base oils are classified into groups according to the American Petroleum Institute (API) system, based on their manufacturing process, sulfur content, saturate content and viscosity index.
Group I Base Oils
Group I base oils are produced through conventional solvent refining. They have the highest sulfur content and lowest viscosity index of the three groups.
They remain in use for less demanding applications and formulations where cost is a primary consideration, such as certain industrial oils and general-purpose lubricants.
Group II Base Oils
Group II base oils are produced through hydroprocessing, which removes more impurities and results in a purer, more stable product with a higher viscosity index than Group I.
They offer improved oxidation stability and a cleaner performance profile, and are widely used in modern engine oils and industrial lubricants where better performance is required without the cost of a full synthetic.
Group III Base Oils
Group III base oils undergo more intensive hydroprocessing, including hydrocracking and hydroisomerisation, producing a highly refined product with a high viscosity index.
Group III oils are often marketed as synthetic or semi-synthetic base stocks and are commonly used in premium engine oils and high-performance lubricants that require strong thermal stability and low-temperature flow.
Comparing the Groups
- Group I — Lower cost, suited to less demanding applications
- Group II — Better stability and cleanliness, widely used across modern formulations
- Group III — Highest performance and stability, used in premium and synthetic-grade products
The right choice depends on the finished product’s performance requirements, target market and cost position — not on assuming a higher group number is always the correct answer.
What Buyers Should Confirm
Before ordering, buyers should confirm the required viscosity grade, applicable specification or standard, and request the Technical Data Sheet and Certificate of Analysis for the specific batch or release.
Packaging — bulk, drums or totes — and delivery terms should also be agreed based on the buyer’s production or blending setup and destination.
